Chapter 1.15: Punch Away the Pain

Hayden couldn't get what the counselor said out of his head, and the gym had always been his safe place. It's where he went when he needed to get out except this time he had taken some chick with him, because he didn't want to be alone. She was all excited, the cute new kid had asked her out on a date. He knew he shouldn't have let her think that; he should have told her it was just hanging out, but he wasn't the nicest person so he didn't say anything.

Grunting as he ran on the treadmill, he started to think about what the counselor told him and how this was his last chance. If he fucked it up here, he wouldn't be able to graduate High School and no graduation meant no diploma for him which really screwed with jobs. So, he was in a rough place. Hayden hated school, so much, but he was smart and knew he needed to graduate so he had been trying.

"Hayden, are you listening?" Ciera asked him, he blinked and turned to look at her. He hadn't been, in fact he wished she would shut up already. How many times can one person talk about neon pink nail polish anyways? The answer was apparently six times.

"Sure," Hayden said. He could tell she was probably getting pissed off, and he really didn't care at this point.

"Why did you ask me out if you weren't going to pay any damn attention to me?" Ciera demanded to know. Yeah, the chick was angry.

"Never said it was a date, besides I'm more of a friends with benefits kind of guy," Hayden said and smirked at her. Her eyes went wide, and then she stormed out of the gym. He didn't care, and despite knowing that she was likely to go spread rumors about him at school tomorrow he didn't care.

He decided that he needed to hit something, repeatedly. He pictured the people that have hurt him, the ones who he once cared about but learned he was nothing to them. He kept picturing them as he punched the hell out of the punching bag. It was their fault, their choices he was here now and ultimately their actions that of which changed him. An hour later, he was exhausted and received a text from Caleb. Caleb was the only one who stood by him when everything else had gone to shit.

He sighed, his friend wanted him to come home or the house that they lived in now. They did have school in the morning, after all. Hayden left the gym a half hour later and arrived back at their house.

"Dude, we have school in the morning! You need to stop going out so late, I won't be able to help if you fuck this up," Caleb told him. He wasn't lying. Hayden knew that, he knew he wouldn't be able to get him out of trouble this time, he would be shit out of luck if it didn't work out this time.

"Yeah, I know. I just needed to clear my head," Hayden muttered. He walked past Caleb and into their house, which they paid for with stolen money, but who cared? "I'll see you in the morning," he said with a yawn.
