Chapter 1.17: Not Again

Hayden had a rough day at school, no, he had a very shitty day at school. It all started when his programming instructor gave him a zero on his test because he was accused of cheating. It was a load of crap. Hayden had called him out on it, and was sent home early which was also shit.

Everything was shit today, and then later when the new kid at school showed up it got even worse. Much, much worse and he was glad he was sent home or else he would have lost it. The new kid, Seth Marino, was the one person he absolutely hated. The kid was nothing but trouble, and it wasn't the normal kind of trouble either. Seth was the reason that Hayden had gotten kicked out of his last school, or more accurately his last three schools. Now, he was here at the same school again and if he had left everyone alone then his day would have been decent.

Hayden had decided to go for a walk, to Magnolia Blossom which usually helped clear his head as most exercise did. His walk had started out fine, great even, but as he walked around some park tables he heard a familiar voice. Two familiar voices, he stopped and headed in the direction, friends were always a good thing. He soon realized he was hearing Isobel's voice, and he grinned. He had been meaning to talk to her again, but his programming and their last conversation had made him give her some space. Hayden rounded a corner and then froze, his face began to contort with anger. That little shit, why couldn't he just leave people alone?

There he was, and not only was he here but he was here with Isobel. The one girl who called him out when no one else did. The girl who called him a jackass in their first conversation, and the girl who was now in Seth Marino's arms. Hayden was pissed, no, he was livid. He couldn't move, afraid to leave her with that asshole.

Watching, as the two moved and growing angrier as the seconds ticked by the more he put his hands on her. How fucking dare he, he had no right to touch her in that way and he had no fucking place here.

Hayden was now seeing red, but he couldn't let them see him so he hid behind a tree and watched. He wouldn't leave her alone with him, she needed someone to watch out for her and protect her from the boy next to her. He texted Caleb, telling him that Seth Marino was here and that they needed to do something, soon. His phone buzzed, and he had to grit his teeth at the reply. Caleb didn't want him to get involved.

Eventually, the two of them went separate ways and Hayden trailed silently behind Isobel as she walked home. There wasn't room for error anymore, he couldn't let her get hurt. Once he watched her enter their newly constructed house he went home and sought out Caleb.
"Don't get involved, you can't afford to anymore. I'm serious, you won't be able to get back into any school if this goes wrong," Caleb said, like he always did when this happened.

"This time is different!" Hayden yelled.

"How?! How is it any different than the last three times?!" Caleb demanded to know, glaring at him.

"Because he's going after her!" Hayden shouted. Caleb stood there, frozen and trying to calm down as Hayden grew more angry at the situation. "I can't let this happen, she deserves better," Hayden said, slowly in between ragged breaths.

"Is she really worth it?" Caleb asked. "She did call you a jackass among other things," he said.

"That is why she is worth it, she isn't some silly teenage girl. She's Isobel, she's the only one who won't put up with it and Seth Marino is going to hurt her if I don't do something about it," Hayden stated, still angry.
"Okay, what if you steal her from him? Swoop in as the heroic guy who kept her from getting hurt and you get to have her," Caleb said. Hayden laughed, there was no 'having' Isobel Bay. She was not someone to mess with and if anything she would be the one to have him.

"No, I am going to steal her and then make sure no one ever comes close to hurting her," Hayden said.

"Who knew that the way to your heart was to call you a jackass? Might have saved some girls the trouble of trying to impress you," Caleb said, trying to lighten the mood.

  1. Oh. How sweet. He really is smitten with her. But I want to know more about why Seth is following him around and causing trouble! I think maybe I like Hayden.
